Canada and the Philippines Are Teaming Up

Archive Text

Well, this just got interesting. Canada, not exactly known for throwing its weight around in the Pacific, is about to sign a defense pact with the Philippines. The reason? China’s been getting a little too comfortable pushing smaller nations around in the South China Sea, and the Philippines is calling in backup.

This agreement would let Canada and the Philippines hold joint military exercises—something that’s bound to set off alarm bells in Beijing. It builds on existing cooperation, like Canada’s recent move to share satellite data with the Philippines to track illegal Chinese vessels. Now, they’re taking it up a notch, likely involving warships, troops, and a clear message: China doesn’t get to rewrite the map unchallenged.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because the U.S. and Australia already have similar deals with the Philippines. In other words, China’s neighbors aren’t just rolling over anymore. And while Beijing will predictably call this “Western interference,” let’s not pretend they haven’t been interfering in everyone else’s backyard for years.

The big question now? How serious is Canada about this fight? Are they just here for the drills, or will they actually put real skin in the game? Either way, one thing’s for sure—China’s power grab isn’t going unanswered anymore.
