The Caraballo Mountains create their own weather systems, trapping moisture and generating dense, low-hanging cloud cover that could ground all air operations for days. A tropical downpour could turn a hastily prepared forward airstrip into an impassable bog of mud within minutes, making it impossible for a heavy fighter-bomber like the P-47 to take off or land safely. This forced XIV Corps to fight a battle of brute-force attrition, ordering frontal assaults against fortified ridges because they lacked the specific intelligence required for more surgical strikes. The corps was unable to find and destroy Japanese command posts or interdict their hidden supply trails, allowing the defenders to sustain their resistance far longer than anticipated.

The result was a bloody, predictable cycle. An American infantry battalion would be ordered to seize a numbered hill, advance into a wall of unseen fire, and suffer devastating casualties.

This directly led to preventable losses on a large scale. Every L-5 shot down or grounded by weather was a set of eyes removed from the battlefield, and the cost was paid in infantrymen's lives.
